BEACH CLEANING AT EAST COAST PARK, 21 OCTOBER 2017 We all know that beaches are the bridges between land and the ocean. People visit beaches and sometimes leave behind garbage. These garbage then finds its way into the ocean, thereby polluting the Oceans. Similarly garbage also is brought back to the beaches by the ocean waves. This can have negative effects on marine life. Sea creatures, fish do not know that a shiny candy wrapper is not meant to be eaten. It can easily be mistaken as a fish or piece of kelp. If ingested our trash can cause harm. However, trash can cause injury even if it is not ingested. To create awareness amongst the ship staff as Singapore is an island nation and there are beaches all around, we did Beach cleaning at East Coast Park on 21 October 2017 Before we proceed we have to register with NEA on the site and date, as they are separated into different section across East Coast Park. NEA have assigned to us section B which was available on 21 Oct 2017. We have forward a guided note from NEA to staff who will be attending beach clean-up to inform them on the items that needs to be pick up and items that do not need to be pick up. Some litter which are commonly found that need to be picked up are like e.g Plastic bag, cup, straw, packet drinks, canned drinks etc. And items that do not need to be pick up like e.g dried leaf, twigs, sea shells, pong pong fruit, coconut husk, driftwood etc. To avoid any injuries we have to put on comfortable shoes, working gloves and use tongs instead of hands to pick up litter. D Day It was a sunny Saturday and we are all set and ready to clean up the beach. Our goal for today is to pick up unwanted litter along the coast side of section B. In order for us to work effectivity, we are paired up in 2. We have spent about 2 hours and collected a total of 10 - 13 bags of litters. It was a great and meaningful time spent. Final group photo before we wrap up and go home. |
